Rear Kitchen Extension & Internal Reconfiguration in Lambeth, Near Clapham Common

This project, located in Lambeth just off Clapham Common, involved a carefully crafted rear ground floor extension, the full reconfiguration of the ground and first floors, and a sensitive refurbishment throughout. The clients wanted to open up the rear kitchen and dining area to the garden while maintaining a generous outdoor space, as well as incorporate a utility room, boot room, and WC—all within a modest footprint.

To enhance the connection between indoor and outdoor living, we extended slightly onto the raised patio, creating a stepped rear façade that subtly zones the open-plan interior. This new footprint allowed us to develop distinct yet connected kitchen and dining areas, while also providing opportunities for glazing on two sides.

A key feature of the design is a large picture window, positioned to offer garden views from the kitchen sink and worktop—ensuring that daylight floods into the heart of the home. Alongside this, a pivot door adjacent to the kitchen provides day-to-day access to the garden, making outdoor circulation more practical and fluid.

The dining area is fitted with full-height sliding doors that open directly onto the patio, allowing this outdoor space to feel like a natural extension of the interior, perfect for entertaining and informal meals.

The clients felt comfortable with brick as a material, and we embraced this by designing the extension in a contrasting light cream brick—distinguishing the new from the old while maintaining harmony with the existing structure.

Careful attention was given to detailing: with chamfered reveals around the picture window create a sculptural focal point, brick slips were applied to cast in-situ concrete beams and columns. Variation in brick bond patterns above and below the window adds subtle visual interest and a stone coping in a matching tone completes the volume with elegance

Internally, we reconfigured the ground floor to accommodate a discreet boot room and WC, while at the first-floor level, rooms were reshaped to enhance functionality and comfort throughout.

This project reflects our commitment to thoughtful, detail-driven residential architecture—even within tight urban constraints.

The project is now complete, and we look forward to capturing the space in full with professional photography soon
